The History of Toasting…

The word “toast” as applied to drink has its origins in the 1600s when it was common to toss a piece of bread or crouton into a beverage as flavoring.
A respected historian of the times noted that the first application of the word occurred in the town of Bath, England in 1709. A local beauty was seen bathing in public, when an admirer who was taken by her splendor filled a cup with her bath water and drank it in her honor. Soon after, another admirer declared his admiration for the lady but refused to drink the bath water. Instead, he offered
to eat the toast in her honor. And thus, the term stuck…
So, now when you raise your glass in celebration, remember the homage paid to lovely lady and be glad your not drinking bath water!
