Located approximately 14 miles east of the historic "Gold Rush" town of Angels Camp is a very old friend I have not visited in a long time. Forest Meadows Golf Course is situated among giant pines, great oaks and towering cedars just off Highway 4 in Calaveras County. Last week I had the opportunity to renew my love affair with this course and it was just like going home after an extended absence. The golf facility is under the auspices of Sierra Golf Management which recently leased Diablo Grande in Patterson, and Pheasant Run in Chowchilla. Mr. Jeff Christensen is owner of Sierra Golf Management in partnership with Jim Dillashaw, PGA Professional at Forest Meadows. Meadowmont Golf Course is also under the direction of the partners and is considered Forest Meadows' sister course. It is located just up the corridor of Highway 4 and is planning an 18 hole putting course, adjacent to the big course. Opening is slated for Memorial Day weekend. |

Jim has been with Forest Meadows for five years and is a local boy having graduated from Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp. "We pride ourselves on keeping prices down and giving the public specials," advised Jim. A prime example is the Forest Meadows E-club which offers specials with coupons, such as $29.00 per person, which includes green fees, golf cart and a hot dog. This offer will run through May! Forest Meadows features “The E special” that can be accessed on the internet through forestmeadowsgolf.com and there is no membership fee. Forest Meadows is also hosting a junior golf program for three days in July at $30.00 per child which includes two days of instruction; play on the last day plus a hot dog and coke. What better surroundings could you find to introduce your child or grandchild to the wonderful world of golf? Forest Meadows entices the beginner as well as the old veteran with 18 holes that stretch 3,886 yards and plays to a challenging par 60. It features two set of tee boxes, with a slope of 110 for the men and 107 for the ladies. Rhododendrons, azaleas, dogwoods, lilacs and flowering cherries surround lush, blue fescue fairways. |
Some of the fairways meander deep within the pines and giant cedars while others play across the high meadowlands offering spectacular views of the Stanislaus River Canyon. Elevation changes dominate the area making club selection a challenge. Accuracy is the name of the game. Mr. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed the predominately par three course, accompanied by one par five and four par fours. The par threes range from 102 to 207 yards and play around a large lake and several deep blue ponds. The fourth, tenth, sixteenth, and eighteenth holes are classic par fours requiring well placed tee shots, backed by tactical approaches to the lightening quick greens. The only par five greets you from the first tee. This monster is 507 yards, surrounded by tall pines and a small creek which runs along the right side of the fairway. The fourteenth and fifteenth holes guide you along the edge of the Stanislaus River Canyon presenting a stunning vista that begs you to take the time and enjoy. Don't forget the putts break toward the canyon! |

My favorite hole is the par four, eighteenth. It plays 295 yards from an elevated tee, but don't hit the driver. Eighty yards from the green is a large pond you cannot see when launching the tee shot. A well placed three wood brings you within a wedge of the large sloping green. The green is quick and slopes toward the pond. Many an errant golf ball has found a watery grave on the sandy bottom. Par is a good way to finish the day. Overlooking the eighteenth is "Woody's Bar." It has been under the direction of Jeremy and Jon Wood for the last three years and their claim to fame is the infamous “Woody Burger" or "Big Woody." I highly recommend you stop by for refreshments, maybe a famous Calaveras Wine or one of the "micro brews" they have on tap. The bar is open seven days a week, dinner on Thursdays only. Woody's is also available for tournament banquets, weddings and catering outside events. You can also grab something "to go" in between nines! The pro shop is well stocked and manned by a friendly staff, willing to make your every wish their command. Jim is also standing by with expert advice on improving your game. Brand name clubs, clothing and accessories are there for the well equipped and well dressed player. Green fees run from $35.00 on weekdays to $45.00 on weekends. These prices include the cart, which is imperative due to the elevation changes on the course. It's also easier to carry your favorite beverages from Woody's! Small groups, corporate outings and tournaments are welcome. Overnight accommodations are available on the Forest Meadows Properties. It is a gated community affording plenty of privacy for the weary traveler or enthusiastic vacationer. Forest Meadows Golf Course, because of its natural mountain setting, and majestic views is a peaceful getaway that is perfect for all golfers and vacationers. I personally agree with Mr. Robert Trent Jones, “Of all the courses I have designed, Forest Meadows is one of my favorites." Forest Meadows is an old friend I need to visit more often! Forest Meadows Golf Course is located in Murphys, CA at 633 Forest Meadows Dr. For additional information including tee times, call (209) 728-3439 or contact www.ForestMeadowsGolf.com. Also, don't forget to tell them D'vine Magazine sent you! |
