OLD WORLD FEELING Alchemy was constructed in 2000 in a small field where a barn once stood (it was historic so the barn was moved). Its rustic architecture blends with its surroundings yet affords modern amenities. The décor is a melding of Paris Café and Vintage California. A rustic bar, crystal chandeliers and giant mirrors create an atmosphere of classic sophistication. Outdoor seating on the street and patio create a bucolic setting to enjoy a cool one with some great food that nourishes the spirit. SHARABLE STARTERS As we entered Co–Owner/Chef Jason Wright seated us at a table where we had a view of the quaint Main Street of Murphys. Server Joel Evans suggested Iron Skillet Mussels and Sweet Potato Fries to start the festivities. These tasty mussels are indeed served in an iron skillet accompanied by truffle fries. Sweet Potato Fries are dusted with chipotle and brown sugar and served with scallion-cilantro aioli for dipping. We decided to try a Three Hearts Caesar Salad featuring romaine, artichoke and palm hearts with grilled chicken added. When we saw the serving size we found out why they call their appetizers Sharable Starters. Portions are very generous at Alchemy so plan to come hungry or plan to take food home (or both). These meal starters went famously with a glass of Frog’s Tooth 2006 Fume Blanc. We also sampled Heidrun Orange Blossom Mead that is a |
sparkling orange blossom honeywine (no grapes) made as it has been for 5000 years. It is lightly effervescent and has the delicate sweetness of honey. WHO'S COOKING Chef Jason Wright is a graduate of California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. In addition to a stint at Ritz Carlton, he was director of culinary operations for Whiskey Creek restaurants in Mammoth Lakes and Bishop. In Carmel he was co-owner of Bahama Billy’s Steakhouse and Bixby Martini Bistro, both voted “Best Restaurants in Carmel”. Alchemy features innovative cuisines that were favorites at these various locations. Chef Jason calls his cuisine “World comfort food with a twist”. He utilizes big bold flavors with an emphasis on classy American favorites. WHAT'S FOR DINNER? There was an array of innovative entrées in the $17 to $24 range, which is a very competitive price point in view of the generous portions that they serve. The Angus Beef Flatiron Steak is a tasty beef steak with a green peppercorn-brandy sauce that accents the natural flavor. Buttermilk mashed potatoes and julienne vegetables round out the meal. The Ultimate Meatloaf has a smoky BBQ demi-glaze that transforms it into a distinctive delight. |

Crab Macaroni and Cheese features Rotini and Dungeness crab meat bathed in creamy white cheddar and Parmesan sauce and Parmesan Gratinee. The sublime cheese flavor allows the crab essence to create a delectable casserole. WET YOUR WHISTLE Alchemy Café and Wine Bar offers a great selection of local foothill wines by the bottle or glass as well as some 45 beers from around the world. The unusual is standard at Alchemy. Winemaker’s night is held each Tuesday evening featuring a local vintner with wines sold at $5 a glass or $20 a bottle and live music on the patio. SWEET ENDINGS Desserts ($6-$8) at Alchemy are an extravagant work of art by long time Carmel dessert purveyor Bette Burch. She spent 30 years of supplying many of the area’s finest restaurants, including Chef Jason’s. He convinced her to move to Murphys and bring her luscious creations to Alchemy—and what tasty creations they are! Tiramisu was by far the prettiest presentation and largest serving we have seen anywhere. Warm Brownie Sundae features Belgian chocolate, hot fudge, and Vanilla Bean ice cream topped with whipped heavy cream. Yum! Mexican Chocolate Bread pudding was delightful. Bette the Baker makes a “Personal Pie” of the day and on our visit this unique individual pie was a mighty big serving of coconut cream pie that was highly acclaimed by our group. Alchemy is a fine choice if you are looking for a place to go for a special dessert. |
Dessert wines are available to complement your sweet ending. DELI(CIOUS) DELICATESSEN Adjacent to the café is Alchemy Market, which features a large selection of beer, wine, sandwiches, locally baked breads, and picnic foods to go. There are salads, cheeses, olive oils, condiments and unusual delicacies to make your spread special. Last minute gifts and souvenirs can also be found. They feature wines from Calaveras County wineries. Alchemy Co-owner Sandra Carrillo manages the market as well as the cafe.
