Plain and simple, Frank sells wine labels. He’s also a member of Lodi’s Amateur Vintner’s Association, which makes him a wine lover; and the combination of an eye-catching label stuck onto a delicious bottle of wine has the makings of a spectacular relationship. Much to the delight of Haversack, small production wineries are on the rise, and it is this unique niche in the wine industry he finds most appealing. “A lot of new boutique wineries are starting up and they want something totally off-the-wall, so they call me. I’m very unique and there’s nobody out there like me!” he laughs. Haversack was awarded his full journeyman status as an off-set printer in 1974. With ink running through his veins, the accomplished communications specialist brings over 30 years of knowledge and know-how to the printing press. Armed with elbow grease and a degree in Graphic Communications, Haversack spent several years instructing in the graphic arts field, and eventually opened his own shop, Valley Graphics Printing. Valley Graphics specialized in fine art design, foiling and embossing in-house, so area vintners like Oak Ridge, Sebastiani, Guild, and Gallo were using his services. At the time, the print shop produced a large number of short label runs because there weren’t any short wine label houses around. “Then in 1988, desktop publishing came out and it just put the kibosh on fine art design and printing. ” the pressman recalls, which led to his business closing. A series of job changes ensued, and Frank achieved high-level positions at companies such as San Joaquin Packaging, TetraPak, and Old Dominion Box, where he became skilled at complex folding carton printing procedures. It was in the commercial pressure sensitive business, or PS, where Haversack embarked on his involvement in today’s

wine industry, and it was Jim Bonham, owner of Bonham Label LLC in Livermore, who popped the cork on Frank’s career. As he puts it, “Jim was my mentor and has been for the last several years. He’s an outstanding boss and an outstanding person.” Due to today’s technology, for the short run winery, it’s often more economical to run digital since there’s no film or plates involved. In addition, if the customer wants their label foiled, Bonham utilizes a special material to achieve the desired finish that was not available in the past. Today they can print, foil and emboss both inline and offline, something that many of their competitors have yet to master. “Our rates for design and artwork are very competitive. I’m very hands-on, and I have customers meet me here in my home, instead of going into a corporate office,” the technical sales consultant said. Locke, California Artist Chris Spencer rounds out the creative team by giving life to the client’s needs on paper, and his striking artwork graces many a wine bottle. “When we meet with a potential client, they have to bring in a bottle of wine,” Haversack reveals. To no one’s surprise, Frank and Chris literally draw inspiration from sampling the product. “We’ve been able to give our customers something “out of the box.” It’s not artwork generated from a computer. It’s alive, it breathes, and it sells on the shelf,” notes the printing guru. Their joint efforts recently captured five international awards for design and printing. Jim Bonham has given his unique sales consultant the opportunity to not only travel out of the country and promote Bonham Label LLC, but to promote Lodi’s ripening wine appellation as well. Through his tireless efforts, Frank has been involved in bringing boutique California wine to Costa Rica and to China. Notably, Haversack has garnered two Certificates of Appreciation from the State Capitol, in recognition of his participation in world marketing of Lodi wines. “I’ve been blessed through God’s graces,” he smiles. Perched prominently on an accolade-filled table in Haversack’s home office is an autographed box of wine he recently received from singer Mick Fleetwood’s Private Cellars. “We’re the only printer that was able to give Mick what he wanted” Frank beams.
