As a dedicated wine writer, pourer, sipper, and supporter of California wines, the delicious possibilities of the grape are endless. So when my esteemed editors at d'Vine Wine & Visitor's Guide approached me about writing a wine column, corks popped off in my head while I envisioned wine glasses overflowing with the good life!
While I certainly don't claim to be the Roberta Parker of local vino, I do look forward to sharing my thoughts on a few selected wines, in hopes you will sample them for yourself and spread the good wine word to others. Whether you're new to wine or a seasoned sipper, I urge you to take the time to explore and enjoy the infinite pleasures of the good life tucked inside a memorable bottle of wine, a new tasting room, a favorite tasting partner, and the journey of discovering them all.
E2 2006 Verdelho Elegante
Only three wineries in the U.S. produce Verdelho from estate grown grapes, and Lodi's very own Ehlers Family is one of the select few. The prized rare fruit thrives on a mere four acres amid the balmy delta region of the Lodi Appellation.
As bright and transparent as a summer sundress, this aromatic varietal expresses subtle fruitiness and 12% alcohol. Refreshing notes of pears, apricots, and citrus peel are followed with a touch of honey on the finish.
At $15.99 a bottle, toss the car keys, kick back by the pool and uncork a chilled bottle of Verdelho Elegante paired with light summer fare, such as fresh-picked strawberries and a slice of creamy brie.
Awards: 2007 and 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Bronze Medal.

Bokisch 2007 Albarino (Clements Hills)
Lodi wine producers Liz and Markus Bokisch have literally poured themselves into their work of handcrafting exceptional Spanish wines such as their 2007 Albarino (Clements Hills).
Produced from estate grapes organically grown in the rolling foothills located east of Lodi, Bokisch's multi-faceted Albarino elicits a lively bouquet of pear and mandarin peel on the nose. Surprisingly complex layers of grass, citrus, and vegetal flavors emerge on the mid palate, while an unpredictable hint of smoke, leather and 14.1% alcohol will leave you flamenco dancing for more. And at $16 a bottle, you won't tap out your wallet.
Bright, crisp acidity makes this wine an excellent choice to accompany seafood such as halibut served with a side of heirloom tomatoes.
Awards: 2008 Lodi International Wine Awards- Tri-Silver.

Shadow Ranch 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve El Dorado County
From atop the El Dorado Hills Appellation, winemaker Sam Patterson has produced his first vintage, Shadow Ranch 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.
Aromas of black current and mocha give way to silky flavors of coffee, toast and lingering vanilla on the finish. For maximum pleasure, I suggest decanting this robust cab, weighing in at 15.5% alcohol, in the glass or in a wide-mouthed decanter for several minutes.
This is an exceptional wine priced at $34, and deserving of a special occasion, such as It's Tuesday . Pairs superbly with a juicy filet mignon or duck confit. Drink now or lay down for up to a year.
Shadow Ranch wines are available at the tasting room only.
Awards: 2008 California State Fair Gold Medal and Best of Region for Sierra Foothills.
