For many years the Sutter Creek Inn has captured the hearts of its many visitors whom have called it home when visiting the Gold Country. This wonderful piece of Americana is idyllic.

An architectural beauty this 1859 award winning, sprawling New England style Inn features, seventeen rooms, all with private baths and air conditioning, nine patios, hammocks, fireplaces and over eighty trees. If you are an adventurous soul inquire about their swinging bed. It is so popular that four rooms now have them! When you check in, you also will check out from the hustle and bustle of the humdrum and embrace the pleasurable.

This is a very special year because the Way family has owned and operated the Sutter Creek Inn for 40 consecutive years. In 1966 Matriarch, Jane Way purchased the structure from the daughter of State Senator Edward Convers Voorhies who had lived in the house for many years.

Jane’s purchase and commitment to the B & B came about in an unusual way. She encountered some challenging times in the mid nineteen sixties after losing her son in an accident and was open to divine guidance. In her travels she was passing through San Francisco and on an impulse stopped at a spiritualist church. “It was a crazy thing to do,” she admits. But nonetheless she was directed to Minister Florence Becker, a very gifted medium who guided her to release her bitterness, proclaiming she would become very successful with the inn she had recently started. History has shown Florence to be correct and the inn prospered. Today, Jane’s daughter Lindsay is now carrying the torch that lights the way for this family owned business.

In this special environment you can loose yourself in the seclusion provided by the alcoves that surround the inn. Perhaps, relax in a hammock or share a glass of wine under wisteria-covered branches and enjoy the seasonal flowers. Any choice you make will be the correct one.

All of the rooms have their own personalities and it is said that friendly spirits occasionally make an appearance. Mr. Voorhies is believed to be one such spirit that protects his beloved house.

The morning begins when the cook rings the bell, letting the guests know that breakfast is hot on the table. Everyone immediately convenes in the dining area adjacent to the kitchen where guests sit down to a full family breakfast including fresh fruit, meat, breads, juice, coffee and a hot delightful entrée.

You will most likely enjoy lively conversations with someone from another county, state or country. If you are as I am, you will quickly come to the understanding that no matter where you come from or where you’re going friendships can begin in Sutter Creek.

While visiting Sutter Creek, there is a multitude of things to enjoy. To begin with there is Wine Tasting. Just a short distance up the street from the inn is Sutter Creek Wine Tasting; they feature three different wineries and approximately 40 different wines available for tasting. You can experience a local gold mine, historical sites of all types, shop for antiques and recreate at the lakes and rivers. In the evening you can enjoy dining at the nearby Susan’s Place and enjoy their Mediterranean/California cuisine or choose from other fine dining choices within walking distance.

Come enjoy their comfortable hospitality while staying in the first Bed & Breakfast in the West!
