By Kevin Scott Delta and Dawn, the wayward whales journeyed up the delta towards Sacramento making quiet a splash around the world. Perhaps Delta and Dawn were just looking for a place to tee it up and do some wine tasting. In any case if you didn’t catch a glimpse of the famous whales don’t pass up this chance to discover another unique experience Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course. Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course is located just a short distance from Interstate 5 where you will see an ocean of green accenting a stately white clubhouse with a veranda overlooking what is surely the 18th fairway. Designed by Perry Dye, the course is an artistic creation, which brings the old world of golf to the Delta. The atmosphere is friendly, customer oriented and meant for the pure pleasure of the game. This ingenious piece of design is reminiscent of Pete Dye courses such as Whistling Straits, Kohler, Wisconsin, because Perry happens to be the son of the famous designer. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as evidenced by the signature 17th hole, which is the twin to the TPC Sawgrass hole. The TPC version of this island par three brings the PGA guys to their knees, so imagine how you are going to feel, when standing on the tee at Bartley Cavanaugh. Par is great but birdie, like mine, is a memory builder. |
The course stretches 6,159 yards from the back tees and is an example of pure imagination from front to back. Guarded by numerous trees, water and mounds the fairways are Bermuda grass and give the player a sense of links and stadium golf. Fourteen bunkers await the errant shot on seven of the holes. The greens are small. Undulation and subtle breaks make one putt good; two putts the norm. Many ponds guard the fairways particularly on the finishing 18th. Guarded on the left side this beauty requires accuracy both off the tee and during the approach. A well thought out iron or fairway metal should “be the ticket.” Par is a good score to end the day considering the daunting Delta winds, which can dramatically accentuate a draw or fade. The pro-shop is a golfer’s dream. Brand name clubs and balls are available at reasonable prices. If a coordinated outfit is in your future, Bartley Cavanaugh is the place! Dylan Flynn, General Manager, said: “We have a variety of clientele from beginning to experienced players. I love the family atmosphere of Morton Golf and Bartley Cavanaugh.” Starting from humble beginnings in the Restaurant Industry, Dylan began busing tables eventually working his way into management of Bistro’s in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. |

Dylan went on to attend the San Diego Golf Academy, graduating with honors and is currently working on his PGA card. This young man began his golf career at Morgan Run Resort in Rancho Santa Fe, CA advancing from cart barn to the pro-shop in one year! Dylan has been with Bartley Cavanaugh since September 2001. Dylan said, “We are proud to host area high school golf programs, including Christian Brothers, Kennedy and McClatchy High Schools. Morton Golf, along with Capitol City Golf, sponsors not only the High School Conference Tournaments but also the PGA 1st Tee program.” The gentleman responsible for the beauty of Bartley Cavanaugh is Golf Course Superintendent Mr. Campbell Turner, CGCS. “Dylan has a great idea and I am working on it as we speak. We are allowing the grass to grow longer on top of the mounds. It will increase the difficulty of the shot and will award accuracy. Hitting it straight and keeping it in the fairway is important on our course.” Campbell brings a lot of experience to Bartley Cavanaugh, including stints at U.C Davis, El Macero Country Club and Riverbend Golf Course. The clubhouse boasts of a fine restaurant under the management of Ms.Yawluck “Eet” Chinttenden. The B. C. Café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as the “ole bar” for your favorite beverage! The restaurant features a patio overlooking the course. It is a perfect place to hold business meetings and has been a highlight for the numerous weddings and private parties hosted by Bartley Cavanaugh every year! The Director of Golf is Ken Morton Sr. who is also the CEO of Morton Golf and Tom Morton is the Director of Instruction. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to meet them, but their outstanding reputation precedes them. |
