As the months, weeks, days and hours quickly peel away from the timeline of life, we may find ourselves prisoners of the overwhelming stress of the day-to-day grind.

I would like to suggest a trip to an outside the mainstream locale where words like tranquility, relaxation, discovery and laughter are the norm. Choose to let yourself experience a destination that is a serene little hamlet immersed in history waiting for you to add your own chapter.

The place I speak of is St. George Hotel, located in the small town of Volcano in Amador County, just a short distance off

Highway 88 north of Pine Grove. This compact village, tucked into a small valley is perfect for the traveler who desires seclusion yet seeks to discover peace and serenity with a sprinkle of merriment thrown in.

It may be difficult to believe today - but at one time this town was once the center of commerce, bustling with energy and excitement for those who were seeking their fortune in the gold rush years. At the peak of Volcano’s prosperity some 5,000 people inhabited the town and today as in the yesteryear the St. George Hotel anchors the activity in the town.

Today, the hotel remains a fresh and delightful destination point, welcoming all who come to experience the past, explore the present and partake of the inert feeling of well-being.

In 1848, a party of mustered–out Mexican War veterans made their way into the valley and discovered evidence of a considerable amount of gold. The event marked the end of peace and quiet for more than sixty years. Under the oaks, pines and in the meadows, lay GOLD! Heavy and yellow it lay glittering everywhere. By 1870, the valley was essentially gone – dug up, washed away, blasted out and chewed up. Multitudes of pioneers came to carve out their own fortunes. Some succeeded but most failed.

Like many of the buildings in Volcano, the current hotel is only the latest on the site. Three earlier hotels burned on the site

and the last fire consumed the entire block. In 1867 B. F. George built the present “fire safe” building and called it St. George to “thwart the demonic fire dragon”. Fire safe was a 19th century term meaning built of brick and stone. Heavy iron doors were added for further protection.

In 1880 Mr. A. Petty bought the hotel and under his care it quickly became known as one of the best hotels in the county. The hotel has seen a number of owners and seems to ascend that coveted position.

In 1985, the U. S. Department of the Interior placed the hotel on the National Registry of Historic Places celebrating its cultural resources worthy of preservation.

Today, the hotel is owned and operated by Richard Winters, Jennifer Zajac-Winters and Gary Little. They have made the commitment to continue the restoration of this grand hotel. Richard said, “It is a labor of love and like anything worthwhile it takes time and dedication to achieve the ultimate goal.” Under their leadership the St. George has been voted “Best Fine Dining” and “Best Place to take a date” in Amador County for the second year in a row.

The hotel is a full service hotel offering first-class dining, a historic bar, catering services and a Conference facility that can host 40 people. In the spring and summer entertainment can be found in the lovely and intimate garden area behind the hotel. The Main buildings original architecture adds to the charm and ambiance. On the main floor the parlor has a beautiful grand fireplace, 10-foot ceilings and player piano. The hotel will provide you with the feel of the western frontier yet provide modern conveniences and allow you let your hair down and have fun!

All the guest rooms are appointed with antiques, comfortable queen or double beds, high ceilings and hardwood floors. The rooms in the main building open up to an outside veranda, where a sunrise or sunset may be in your future plans. If you are seeking a Kodak moment then just seat grab your gal or guy and head for the backyard swing and one of the friendly staff will be happy to take your picture.

St George Hotel The folks at the St. George Hotel are very service oriented and will gladly assist you with any special accommodations, requests or local attractions. Picnic baskets can be provided for day trip adventures.

Amador County features 32 wineries, 3 golf courses that are nearby, the extraordinary Daffodil Hill in the spring, Black Chasm Cavern, Sutter Gold Mine, Main Street Theatre Works, Volcano Theater Company, Volcano Gallery and for those of you that like winter sports Kirkwood Ski Resort is a must visit.

Also, in this magazine you can read about the fabulous restaurant and bar that is located at the St. George Hotel. The locals affectionately call it “The George” and you too may become affectionate about your time spent in this iconic locale.
