Look out Tinsel Town, the premier is now in Wine country! The numbers are in and wine is California’s most valuable finished agricultural product, with a $45 billion economic impact, yes, bigger than the film industry that generates around $30 billion annually. Variety magazine states that box office ticket sales are down, nationwide. This may be due to the fact that more people, tired of competing with cell phones and noisy movie goers, are opting to stay home for a quiet evening with a DVD and a bottle of wine. Not only has wine sales surpassed the movie industry it is quickly encroaching upon the theme park business as well. What is amazing is that both vineyards and wineries are the second most popular California tourist destination after Disneyland! Last year alone, more than 15 million people visited California’s wine growing/producing areas. Move over Mickey Mouse, Merlot is coming through! Actually, if you plan to visit Disneyland this year, you can now take an educational wine seminar and get a glass of premium varietal wine at Disney’s California Adventure Golden Vine Winery. Being a Disney fan, I wonder what Walt Disney would think about wine being served in his “magic kingdom” theme park amongst Mickey, Tinker Bell, and Winnie the Pooh? If you think about the wine country experience, where else can you taste and purchase wine, enjoy beautiful scenery, meet great people whom are passionate about what they do, and see first hand how a consumer product is actually made from the vine to the bottle? I think that these are just a few reasons why wine tasting and visits to wine country are on the rise. As far as alcoholic beverages go, wine is becoming more appealing to Americans than either beer or distilled spirits. The fact is that there is very little bad wine being sold in today’s market place. The vast majority of wine available to consumers today is mass-produced, and generally of good quality. Statistical trends show that by the year 2010 the United States will be the world’s largest wine consumer. The truth of the matter is that the state of California is “Wine Country” and has become big business. Over 90% of wines produced in the United States are being produced here in our “Golden State” and over 50% of that wine is consumed by Californians. The red carpet is being rolled out and the Award goes to California for its outstanding wine experience.
